Strategic Goals Drive Hiring Decisions in Business and at Work

Sunday, February 11th, 2018

I participated in a discussion recently with a CEO and one of their Board members, where my advice was sought on which organization positions should be staffed. I listened to their conversation for a while, and then asked a question: “What are your strategic goals?”

Fortunately, they had 5 strategic goals, one of which is financial (a goal that’s financial is standard in any strategic plan). Based on those strategic goals, it was clear that at least one marketing and one business development position needed to be created and filled ASAP.

In my over 25 years of HR and Recruiting experience, staffing without strategic goals is an educated guess at best; and whistling in the dark at worst. The process of putting together a one-page strategic plan can be accomplished, in a pinch, in a few weeks. It’s absolutely worth the time investment, which will focus the entire organization to better achieve not only their goals, but also their long-term return on investment (ROI).

How does your organization use strategic goals to effectively and profitably drive staffing, in business and at work?
